Tires for electric vehicles

There is no legal category called an EV tire. What changes is the vehicle: more mass, more instant torque, and a cabin quiet enough to hear the road.

No regulatory definition

Regulation (EU) 2020/740 defines tire classes C1, C2 and C3 by vehicle category, and UN R117 defines C1 tires as those conforming to UN R30. Neither text contains an electric-vehicle term. An EV tire is a manufacturer designation, and the EU label applies to it like to any other tire in its class.

What changes on an electric vehicle

MassBattery packs make EVs heavier than comparable combustion cars; Hankook puts the difference at up to 30 percent. Manufacturers therefore point to tires with a sufficient load index, often Extra Load, which also allows higher inflation pressures.

TorqueAn electric motor delivers its full torque immediately, so weight transfers are sharper and manufacturers report higher wear. No source gives a general percentage, and RideVector does not quote one.

Rolling resistanceLower rolling resistance means more range. The EU label’s fuel efficiency class is the comparable figure for this on every tire.

NoiseWithout engine noise, road noise is more audible. Several makers fit a foam layer inside the tread: Continental states up to 9 dB(A) less interior noise with ContiSilent, Michelin up to 20 percent lower perceived noise with its acoustic technology, Pirelli a sound-absorbing sponge in its ELECT range.

Manufacturer EV ranges

Examples documented by the makers themselves are Pirelli ELECT, Hankook iON and Michelin Pilot Sport EV and e.Primacy. They are product families, not regulated marks. Michelin states that all of its tires are suitable for EVs and that some respond to specific driving demands.

What to check when replacing

  1. An approved size for the vehicle, as with any car.
  2. A load index at least equal to the one in the vehicle documents, including Extra Load where specified.
  3. A compatible speed symbol.
  4. The EU label: fuel efficiency class for range, wet grip and noise for the rest.
